Hair Salons are closed, and it’s up to us to maintain our appearances until this quarantine is over. My go-to-styles has been a wash-and-go, braids, and two-strand twists. My saving grace has been Camille Rose’s Honey Leave-in Conditioner. For those who are unaware of the magical powers of Honey, well, here it is! Honey is an emollient that moisturizes, locks in shine, and restores the natural luster in your hair. To get the most out of this product, I wash and condition my hair first and then apply the Honey onto damp hair with my fingers to ensure that moisture reaches every strand of my hair. The Honey has left my hair hydrated and smooth.
Five ingredients that stood out: Honey– smooth the hair follicles, and add shine to dull hair. Olive Fruit Oil – is rich in Vitamin E and is considered a powerful antioxidant that helps moisturize and protect hair from damage. Aloe Leaf Juices – penetrates the hair shaft for intense moisture promoting hair growth through its richness in essential fatty acids. Sugar Cane– rehydrates the dry scalp. Sweet Orange Fruit Oil– improves the hair strands, smooths, and moisturizes dry strands (helps in hair growth, treats hair loss, gives hair shine, and removes dandruff.
Go to Camille Rose website for more information on their Leave-in Collection.
In everyday makeup, you will find toxic ingredients that are linked to allergies, irritation, harming your reproductive system, or even causing cancer. Now in days, makeup brands are becoming more conscious of what they put in their products. But be mindful of products claiming to be vegan, but still have ingredients that cause harm to your body. I prefer a brand that prides itself on product safety and organic ingredients like ILIA does. Their True Skin Serum Concealer is a favorite product of mines. This lightweight creamy concealer has a serum texture that adds moisture while perfectly blending into the skin to brighten the dark circles under the eye. It is best to apply this concealer under the eye before blending your foundation. According to Bobbi Brown, you should find a concealer with a yellow tone that is one to two shades lighter than your skin to lighten the dark circles under the eyes.
I’ve listed two safe ingredients that give this product an advantage over the concealers that are currently in the market right now:
Albizia Julibrissin Bark Extract– protects collagen and elastin, and reduces the signs of under-eye bags, dark circles, and a dull complexion. Tetrabexyldecyl Ascorbate– is a very stable oil-soluble Vitamin C that has an antioxidant activity that helps stimulate collagen production as well as clarifying and brightening the skin.
During the winter, my hair becomes very unmanageable. I tried popular oils such as olive, coconut, and Jamaican Castor oil; these oils sat on top of my hair instead of penetrating moisture into my hair shaft. The problem wasn’t the oils, but the lack of knowledge of knowing what my hair needs. I have low porosity hair, which means my hair does not absorb moisture. The oils that I named were more suited for those with high porosity hair. Low porosity hair requires products that would provide moisture without weighing the hair down. According to https://naturalhairinsights.com/top-10-light-oils-for-low-porosity-hair/ Sweet Almond Oil is considered the top 10 oils to use for low porosity hair. Now Solution’s Sweet Almond Oils is 100% pure almond oil derived from fresh almonds. This vegan oil is rich in vitamins that promote hair growth and a healthy scalp. I prefer this oil for the colder month when my hair begins to dry out. I use the sweet almond oil for my LCO (Leave-in conditioner, cream, oil) routine. This oil is applied last to increase moisture retention from the leave-in conditioner and styling cream. After weeks of using this oil, my hair doesn’t feel dry or brittle, but feels smoother and looks hydrated.

Foundation- is the lowest load-bearing part of a building, typically below ground level.
Applying foundation on the face is similar to designing the right foundation to fit the building conditions of a home. The foundation is the starting point to achieving any beauty look. A couple of tips I’ve learned from my friends in purchasing foundation is to get the right shade for your skin (you can test this on the transverse carpal part of the hand), foundation color should match your neck, and consider the best formula for skin type (such as powder, liquid or water-based). This is all helpful, but a lot of foundations on the market has toxic ingredients that cause skin irritations, developmental problems, cancer, and even reproductive issues. This information alone has led me to a vegan foundation from Mineral Fusion’s makeup line named sheer tint mineral foundation. Mineral Fusion sheer tint mineral foundation is a lightweight foundation that gives full coverage with a consistent texture that goes on smoothly and has a luminous finish. To all the natural beauties out there, you can get the appearance of having no foundation without masking your natural skin. I have worn this product on numerous occasions and received compliments on how beautiful my skin looks. My only gripe with this product is that there are only three shades available for this line. I was fortunate enough to find a shade that compliments me, but everyone should be able to experience how unique this product is. I want to recommend creating different colors for customers with darker, yellow, or cooler skin tones.
Here are five products to stay away from when picking out your next foundation: BHA, Siloxanes (D4&D5), Lead, Mercury, and Talc.
Mineral Fusion Sheer Tint Mineral Foundation retails $32.99
It’s Valentines Day, and I’m sitting here writing this post on my favorite shade of lip fondant from Half Caked called Power Trip. When I wear this shade, J. Cole’s song “Power Trip” comes to mind. This deep crimson red color will have your date enthralled by its alluring mousse texture that has a matte finish which is not only picture perfect, but will last up until an end of the night selfie. There’s no need to worry about dry patches of color appearing on the lip because Half Caked uses Jojoba Oil and Vitamin E to keep your lips moist. For your next date, Be sure to purchase Half Caked Lip Fondant for $16. Power Trip is a gem, but there are other stunning colors to pick from!
As we completed our celebration of International Women’s Day on March 8, 2017, with the hashtag #adaywithoutwoman, Paula Hayes came to mind. She is a product chemist who founded the Hue Noir brand. She has successfully blended science and technology to develop high-quality makeup for women of color who have different skin tones, ranging from fair to deep. I had the pleasure of sampling the Perfect Pout Hydrating Lipstick, the Perfect Shine Hydrating Lipgloss, and the Perfect Pigment velvet eyeshadow from her product line.
Perfect Pout Hydrating Lipstick is true to its name. Hue Noir sent me their Flirtatious color (eggplant purple), which has a rich pigment. This lipstick provided me with moisture without the need of applying Chapstick before the lipstick because the product was blended with nourishing ingredients such as shea butter, jojoba, and avocado butter. Product retails for $25.00
The Perfect Shine Hydrating Lipgloss is my favorite gloss on the market and is worth $20.00. Unlike other brands, this lip gloss did not leave a tacky residue on my lips, and the sangria color that they sent me gave me a silky finish and subtle color. This product also had ingredients such as vitamin E and jojoba to keep the lips nicely moisturized.
The Perfect Pigment velvet eyeshadow was the product that I chose to wear to my event because it delivered twice the pigment and flattered my skin tone. This product retails for $22.00.
I enjoyed having this product at my Power and Beauty Event. Hue Noir brands represent women of all shades. Before going to Sephora to look at their brands, please check out Hue Noir for their fantastic product line.
You probably recognized this product from the first episode of “Insecure” when Issa Rae was trying on several colors to wear on the night of her birthday. I must say that I had an Issa moment; when looking for the right pigment to compliment my 80s-themed velvet black dress to wear to the Power & Beauty event, I tried various colors they had sent me such as Rum Punch, Blackberry, Jamocha and Star Apple. All of the colors were beautiful, but I decided to go with Star Apple for the occasion. No worries; I know I will be wearing the other colors to an upcoming girls’ night out, day party, brunch, or date night.
I quickly gravitated towards the product because of the homage they pay towards the Carribean culture and the wide variety of pigments they offer in their product line. This brand alone dares you to stand out and be confident in your skin. Just like their highly priced competitors’, their product goes on smoothly and leaves a rich pigment on your lip. Unlike their competitors, House of Uni pays close attention to the ingredients they put in their products making them environmentally and health conscious. Check them out before going to the MAC counter to purchase lipstick. Their products retail for $9.00 on their website.
